Mission Statement

The mission of the Department of Nursing Education, Development, and Research is to inspire clinical excellence through mentoring and evidence based practice.  The department strives to promote professional growth within the division of nursing and foster collaborative relationships between disciplines.

What we do

The Department of Nursing Education, Development, and Research is involved with the design, implementation, and evaluation of both formal and informal education for nursing.  Activities include orientation, competence assessment and evaluation, in-service offerings, and continuing education. Last fiscal year we collectively offered 461 classes for a total of more than 345 possible Continuing Education Hours.

Competency-based orientation programs are specific to each division and carefully tailored to meet the needs of both new and experienced nurses.

The Acute Care Division, including Oncology is actively involved in teaching culturally competent care and new advances in pain reassessment, pulmonary hypertension, orthopeadic and joint replacement surgery, chemotherapy treatments, biostem cell reinfusion therapy, and end of life care/palliative care.  They also care for patients with such diverse conditions as cystic fibrosis, cardiac surgery, infectious disease, stroke, diabetes, liver transplant, and epilepsy.

The Critical Care Division, including Progressive Care is actively involved in teaching new advances in practice such as ventilator acquired pneumonia prevention, proper skin care management, documentation and photography, continuous cardiac output monitoring, and SCVO2 monitoring.  They have been instrumental in the development of Code Blue and Rapid Response Teams.  The division also provides education on the care of the organ transplant,, cardiac, surgical, and trauma patients.

Women and Infant Services Division is actively involved in teaching breast milk verification and administration, documentation, blood gas sampling, fetal monitoring, and care of the IDM. In the community we also participate in presenting AWHONN Fetal Monitoring Courses, Maternal Newborn Nursing Courses, and OB PACU Courses through the Regional Perinatal Systems.

The Patient Education Department, is dedicated to supporting the nurses in their efforts to deliver optimal patient teaching by supplying the necessary materials to conduct such teaching, as well as by providing patients and their families with learning opportunities.  Current endeavors include offering of preoperative educational classes for joint replacement, creating a patient friendly version of clinical pathways, and the restructuring of the discharge process and instructions.  The department also manages the closed circuit patient education television channel.

Nurse Residency Program

The UCSD Nurse Residency Program is a learner-focused postgraduate experience designed to support the transition from student to professional and competent nurse.  The purpose of the UCSD Nurse Residency Program is to recruit and retain new graduate nurses through a thorough and high quality orientation experience.  Residents receive the support they need for success throughout the first year of practice.  In addition, new graduate nurses gain a better overall understanding of the organization and their professional development plan.

The UCSD Nurse Residency Program is developed, implemented, and evaluated by UCSD staff nurse leaders who are uniquely qualified to anticipate the needs of nurses working in their departments.  These nurse leaders participate in the program as part of a project required in order to achieve promotion on the Clinical Ladder, the UCSD Department of Nursing career advancement system.  Education, Development, and Research provides the education and support to promotion candidates to ensure a quality, evidence-based program in alignment with the organization’s strategic plan and the 14 Forces of Magnetism.
